GUJARAT GIANTS WOMEN
After losing their first two fixtures, the Gujarat Giants finally managed to turn things around on Wednesday as they defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women by 11 runs in a thrilling encounter. However, they will find it difficult to emulate that performance against Delhi as the latter has been at the top of their game ever since the start of the season.
The Giants will depend on the top order to give them a good start here. Sophia Dunkley, who was elevated to the opening slot to replace injured Beth Mooney brought out her A game as she clobbered the RCB bowlers around the part. Dunkley brought up her half-century in just 18 deliveries, which is a record for the WPL, and went on to score 65 before getting out.
Harleen Deol too was quite impressive as she played a gritty knock of 67 runs. The form of the middle-order batters remains a bit of a concern though for the Giants. D Hemalatha, Ashleigh Gardner, and Annabel Sutherland have got decent starts but have failed to convert them into big inning so far.
The team has roped in Laura Wolvaardt as a replacement for Mooney and it remains to be seen as to where she will be slotted into the team. Kim Garth, who picked up a brilliant fifer against the UP Warriorz went wicketless in the last match.
DELHI CAPITALS WOMEN
The Delhi Capitals Women faced their first defeat of the season in their latest outing as they were beaten quite convincingly by the Mumbai Indians Women. As a result, they stay second on the points table with 4 points. Captain Meg Lanning is in excellent form for the Capitals as she has scored 2 half-centuries in her 3 innings so far. She was also the top-scorer in the match against the Mumbai Indians, scoring 43 runs.
Talking about that game, it was a big failure for Delhi as far as batting was concerned as only 3 of the 11 players managed to reach double digits. Jemimah Rodrigues and Lanning put up a 50-run partnership for the 4th wicket, but once Rodrigues departed, things rapidly went downhill as the Capitals were bundled out for 105. Shafali Verma scored a brilliant 84 in the first match but hasn’t been able to follow it up with a good inning in the next 2 matches.
