Harry Tector wins Player of the Month Award for May 2023
Ireland’s emerging batter Harry Tector edged out Pakistan’s sensation Babar Azam to receive his first ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for May 2023 on the strength of dazzling performances.
Harry Tector was voted the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for May, marking Ireland’s first Men’s Player of the Month award. He defeated Pakistan’s superstar batsman Babar Azam and Bangladesh’s up-and-coming batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Harry Tector continued to demonstrate that he is the present and future of Ireland’s team despite the disappointing conclusion of their Super League campaign.
Harry Tector reached 21* before rain stopped play in the first ODI against Bangladesh in Chelmsford. In the second ODI, he smashed a career-best 140 off 113 deliveries with seven fours and a remarkable 10 sixes.
Harry Tector’s accomplishments were all the more remarkable given that he walked out with his team laboring at 16/2 in the seventh over, but had turned the game around by the end of the 42nd.
Harry Tector and George Dockrell (74* off 47 deliveries) pushed Ireland to 319 in 45 overs, but Bangladesh, led by fellow nominee Najmul Hossain Shanto, raced away with the victory.
In the third ODI against Bangladesh, the Irish batsman bolstered his reputation by scoring 45 runs off 48 deliveries.
“I’m delighted with the Award and would like to thank those who voted for me,” said Tector. “However, cricket is a team sport first and foremost, so the Award is more indicative of the performances and development of the Ireland Men’s squad.”
“Without the assistance of Heinrich [Malan], Andrew [Balbirnie], and the committed group of coaches and athletes with whom I work, I would not have been able to achieve this Award.
“While Laura [Delany] and Eimear [Richardson] have won the analogous award for women, this is the first occasion an Irish player has won the Men’s Award. Although it is a personal honor, I believe it won’t be long before more Irish players are recognized in this manner.
“Thanks to the ICC, but I’m sure you’ll understand that this will be a brief moment of reflection, as we have a crucial Qualifier beginning in a matter of days, and that will be our sole focus for the next few weeks.”
