Dubai to Host Global Chase League – GCL

Global Chase League (GCL) will be held for the first time in a joint venture between FIDE and Tech Mahindra. The world’s largest franchise-based chess league will be held in Dubai. Dubai Sports Council will be the organizing partner of GCL.

Recently, in a press conference in Dubai, the name of this city of the United Arab Emirates was announced as the host country of GCL. It was attended by Indian Consul in Dubai Aman Puri, five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand and other officials related to the tournament.

GCL, the world’s largest and first league-style chess competition, will be held from June 21 to July 2. Earlier, the 64 square logos was unveiled 64 days before the start of the tournament. Now came the announcement of the host country.

Dubai Sports Council Secretary Saeed Hareb is delighted to host the first tournament in Dubai. He said, ‘Hosting the Global Chase League is a memorable occasion for us. FIDE and Tech Mahindra’s vision for the league will truly re-introduce the game of chess to an audience and help connect the game more than ever before.’

Five times World chess champion Viswanathan Anand is the mentor of GCL. Praising Dubai, he said, ‘Dubai is making it attractive by hosting various sports events. The World Chess Championship held in Dubai in 2021 during the Dubai Expo was a great success. Likewise, I believe the Global Chase League will mark a new beginning in the fan experience.’

6 teams will participate in the first season of GCL. Each team will play 6 players. There will be a minimum of 2 women players and 1 icon player per team. Each team will play 10 matches in a rapid format across six boards of the tournament.
