Asia Cup 2022: Rashid Khan Danushka Gunathilaka Heated Moment During SL vs AFG Match

Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan in the first match of the super four stage of Asia Cup 2022. However, the spotlight was also captured by an incident between Sri Lankan batsman Danushka Gunathilaka and renowned Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan indulging in a nasty moment and exchanging heated words.

Gunathilaka reverse-swept Rashid’s delivery beyond short third man on the opening ball of the seventeenth over, resulting in a boundary. Moments afterwards, the two players were observed exchanging angry words in the centre of the field, prompting Bhanuka Rajapaksa to separate them. The leg-spinner appeared upset after the opening ball of the over was hit for a boundary. A few deliveries later, Rashid returned the favour by bowling the Sri Lankan batsman out with a length ball. Gunathilaka attempted to slog-sweep, but the ball twisted in, snuck under him, and struck the wickets.

Prior to this year’s Asia Cup, he played in the United Arab Emirates in 19 Twenty-Twenty matches. Not so for Rashid Khan, the Afghan legspinner who faced Sri Lanka on Saturday night and found himself in a terrible predicament. The group lost. Rashid Khan was soundly defeated by the Sri Lankans in the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. In four overs, he scored 39 runs at an average of almost ten, despite taking one wicket.

India constituted Rashid’s prior worst bowling record on UAE soil. In Abu Dhabi in 2021, this leggie was wicketless with 36 runs scored in four overs. This list is topped by a match versus Zimbabwe in the same calendar year. At the encounter in Abu Dhabi, Rashid captured three wickets in three overs while conceding thirty runs.

In T20, Rashid has collected 116 wickets in 69 matches with a 6.21 economy. In this format, his poorest bowling record is also against Zimbabwe. In Bulawayo, in his second professional encounter, Rashid grabbed one wicket for 52 runs in four overs.

Only once in T20 has this Afghan leg-spinner scored more than fifty runs. In 2016, he was wicketless and scored 51 runs in four overs against South Africa at Wankhede.
